Conference

Marie Casset, honorary lecturer, associate member of CRAHAM – University of Caen Normandy, invites you to discover an unexpected aspect of medieval history: drinking in Normandy in the Middle Ages.

Using written sources, images of banquets, and archaeological objects, she reveals a true culture of beverages, marked by varied practices and a clear social hierarchy. Water, Norman wine, ale, or cider share the grand tables with wines from Gascony, Burgundy, Spain, or Portugal, while local cider and wine remain associated with popular circles. The conference also sheds light on the evolution of productions, from the medieval vineyards to the apple orchards, under the influence of climatic changes starting in the 15th century.
