On the trail of the Meurdrac, a family of Conquerors.

from 16 July 2027

to 31 December 2027

History of a family of travelers through the major events of medieval Normandy

Considered one of the oldest villages in the Granville area, the small commune of La Meurdraquière was founded by a family whose history is even older.

Indeed, some historians say that the Meurdrac family left their Gaelic homeland in the 10th century to join the Scandinavian invaders during their great conquests. A charter dating from the 11th century, signed by Richard II, Count of Rouen, and co-signed by a certain Mudac, also attests to the presence of these travelers in Cotentin at the turn of the Millennium.
The name Meurdrac reappears particularly after the Conquest of William, when Robert fitz Murdrach, falconer to the new king and son of the founder of La Meurdraquière, obtained two fiefs in England. From there, the name Meurdrac spread both in Normandy and throughout England, becoming one of the most powerful families in medieval European society.

This is the story of this family, and by extension the village of La Meurdraquière, which is presented in this guided tour led by Dominic Farrell, a guide for the Granville Terre et Mer Tourist Office. This tour invites participants to trace the path of the Meurdrac family, discover the gradual evolution of its geopolitical influence over the centuries, and understand how a small family was able to rise through the ranks.
