The Tosny, at the origins of the Norman adventure
from 18 September 2027
to 26 September 2027
Shared Memory, Crossed Cultures
The lords of Tosny-Conches are among the great aristocratic lineages of Normandy in the 11th century. Major players in the formation of the Duchy of Normandy, they embody the figure of the ambitious knight, deeply rooted in his lands but turned towards adventure and conquest. As early as 1014, the Tosny engaged as mercenaries in Southern Italy and Spain, before taking part, in 1066, in the conquest of England alongside William of Normandy: Raoul the Young obtained lands and titles there, contributing to the enduring establishment of the Norman nobility across the Channel. Their journey illustrates the scope and influence of Norman networks in medieval Europe.
Entitled "Shared Memory, Crossed Cultures," this international exhibition is dedicated to the saga of the barons of Tosny. It is based on a partnership between Normandy (Les Trois Lacs), Italy (San Vito dei Normanni), and England (Flamstead). The exhibition highlights the role of the Tosny in the construction of the duchy and their participation in the major European dynamics of the Middle Ages, through historical documents, reconstructions, maps, and an immersive audiovisual setup. An educational tapestry, inspired by the Bayeux tradition, illustrates the links between Tosny and Venables, while a scientific catalog, enriched by recent historical research, accompanies the exhibition.
