Conference

Hugo Fresnel, lecturer in medieval history at the University of Picardie, associate member of CRAHAM – University of Caen Normandie, is presenting a conference dedicated to the rules and ideals of chivalric warfare in the central Middle Ages.

He explores the art of combat as a cultural and political fact, at the heart of an aristocratic thought that values prowess, honor, and clemency. But behind these stated norms, the reality proves to be more nuanced: the conference also revisits moments of rupture and exception, notably the Battle of Hastings, where the chivalric ideal clashes with the brutality of history.
