The Thursdays of the Baronnie - The Language of Guillaume
26 November 2026
Conference
Catherine Bougy, emeritus lecturer in French linguistics and dialectology of Normandy at the University of Caen Normandy, offers an exciting investigation into the language of William the Conqueror.
In the absence of direct testimony, it is not possible to know precisely which language the duke-king spoke. However, the literary texts produced in the Norman and Anglo-Norman areas in the 11th and 12th centuries allow us to put forward solid hypotheses. These avenues are reinforced by the study of current Norman patois and contemporary English, which retains many traces of the language introduced in England by William and his barons. A conference where linguistics illuminates history in a different way.
