The Norman Invasion of Ireland – Accident of History or Calculated Plan?

Step into a unique live experience that re-examines one of the most pivotal moments in Irish history.

Using the model of a judicial inquiry and led by a High Court Judge, The Norman Inquiry reopens its 2019 investigations into who was responsible for the Norman invasion of Ireland. Having previously exonerated Diarmait, King of Leinster, this new Inquiry examines whether the Normans were planning to invade anyway, how they justified this ‘intervention’ into the affairs of a fellow Christian country and whether their action constituted a ‘war crime’.

Taking place in Ferns, County Wexford, this immersive event brings history to life through performances and debate. Actors portray key medieval figures, giving evidence and facing cross-examination by legal teams, in a format inspired by Common, Brehon, and international law.

Blending history, theatre, and legal inquiry, the event is developed in collaboration with barristers, historians, academics, and the local community. It is led by Catherine Mac Partlin (Ferns Heritage Group) and Dr Ronan O’Flaherty (Crane Bag Consulting), building on the success of the 2019 MacMurrough Inquiry.
