The echo of centuries, chronicles of medieval Saint-Lô
from 02 April 2027
to 31 December 2027
The Art and History Museum of Saint-Lô presents the exhibition The Echo of Centuries – Chronicles of Medieval Saint-Lô, dedicated to the medieval past of the city.
Through an immersive journey, the public rediscovers a often overlooked history: that of a once prosperous and influential city, whose legacy remains visible in urban planning, ramparts, monuments, and collective memory.
Conceptualized as a journey through time, the exhibition relies on the stories of six characters from the 15th century — a governor, a builder bishop, masters of currency, a merchant, a clothmaker, and a clergy member — to unveil the multiple faces of the city: a fortified town, a religious center, a commercial and craft hub.
A scenography inspired by comic strips brings these stories to life through life-sized characters, immersive sets, and a visual narration blending works, objects, costumes, and sensory and digital devices.
The entire experience is accessible, interactive, and tailored to all audiences, with particular attention paid to families and young visitors.
The exhibition also highlights the resilience of the city in the face of wars, epidemics, and destruction, echoing contemporary issues of memory and identity.
A cultural program (workshops, visits, conferences, medieval gastronomy) extends the experience, while numerous works and objects from public collections — manuscripts, textiles, sculptures, archives — illustrate the richness of Normandy at the end of the Middle Ages.
Through this proposal, the museum invites visitors to rediscover Saint-Lô and encourages dialogue between the past and present in a sensitive, educational, and deeply human approach.
