The earthworks around Aubry-le-Panthou

20 June 2027

The Val Fortin, an example of a motte and bailey

Proposed in the form of an illustrated lecture, this presentation focuses on the different typologies of earthen fortifications around Aubry-le-Panthou.

The presentation notably relies on the example of the Val Fortin to demonstrate that some motte-and-bailey structures have evolving uses over time. It highlights the fact that these structures, initially defensive, can be repurposed for other uses, such as quarrying.

At the end of the lecture, a question-and-answer session may be offered. Appointments for visits to the mentioned sites can also be considered, thus extending the exploration on the ground.

Speaker: Patrice Samson, president of the Historical Society of Vimoutiers in Pays d’Auge.
